Police shed more light onto the timeline of a string of a dozen shootings in South Austin over the weekend.
In a statement Monday afternoon, the Austin Police Department identified one suspect, 17-year-old Cristian Fajardo Mondragon, and said that the shootings were a mix of “random” incidents and targeted shootings.
“Some victims were known to the suspects, while other incidents appeared to occur without any known connection,” APD said in a statement.
Saturday’s incidents
The incidents surrounding the string of shootings began Saturday at 11:30 a.m., when police say a firearm was reported stolen from Central Texas Gunworks. A vehicle seen in surveillance footage, a Hyundai Sonata, had been reported stolen from the Social Apartments just east of I-35 on Oltorf Drive.
Hours later around at 3:58 p.m., police say suspects shot at a trailer park in Southeast Austin near U.S. Highway 183. No injuries were reported.
Roughly a half hour later at 4:30 p.m., suspects allegedly shot multiple cars and an occupied apartment at Whisper Hollow Apartments. Police say a dark-colored sedan was seen on surveillance footage and that shell casings were recovered at the site.
At 6:08 p.m. Saturday, APD said suspects fired into the door of a third-floor apartment off Montopolis Drive. A suspect was reportedly seen by entering a dark sedan to leave the scene. At this point, police say, detectives connected the three shootings.
Then at 6:19 p.m., a home off Cypress Bend in Southeast Austin was riddled with bullets. The homeowner wasn’t home, but his car was struck by bullets and a camera across the street captured a dark sedan fleeing the scene.
At 7 p.m. police say a Hyundai Elantra was stolen from a Motel 6 off the I-35 service road between Oltorf Drive and Woodward Street.
An hour and a half later at 8:30 p.m., shots were fired from a car near a business in far East Austin. No property damage or injuries were reported, police say.
Shortly after that at 8:49 p.m., police say a suspect fired shots into a fire station by the Colony Park neighborhood. Firefighters were inside and bullets struck vehicles and equipment. No injuries were reported.
At 8:55 p.m., one person was injured after suspects fired into a parked car near LBJ High School. The victim had minor injuries from shattered glass when bullets struck the windshield.
Sunday incidents
Just before 4 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle was reported stolen in Southeast Austin.
At 7:45 a.m., APD recovered another they believe was connected to the shooting spree.
Just over an hour later at 8:46 a.m., a man was shot in the back and the stomach and taken to hospital. A witness to the shooting near McKinney Falls Parkway and William Cannon Drive said the suspects were in a dark sedan.
Minutes later at 9 a.m., police said they located one of the Hyundais involved in the incidents near South First Street and Ben White Boulevard, but it “eluded before officers could attempt a traffic stop.” Officers later recovered additional stolen cars tied to the shootings at 9:30 a.m.
Police say suspects fired into a fire station in East Austin off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard just before 11 a.m. No injuries were reported. Witnesses said suspects fired from a gold-colored sedan.
Just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday police say suspects stole a white Kia Optima.
Police responded to a shooting at 1:44 p.m. off East Oltorf Street on Burton Drive. Two people were shot in a drive-by shooting and witnesses said suspects were in a white sedan.
Minutes later at 1:53, another shooting was reported involving a white sedan, followed quickly by more shots fired off Burleson Road at 2:02 p.m.
At 2:29 p.m., police say a victim was shot off Dionda Lane in Del Valle. The victim was rushed to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries and is still being treated as of Monday afternoon. Surveillance footage showed a white Kia leaving the scene.
An hour later at 3:23 p.m., Manor Police located a white Kia Optima reported stolen after a call for help from APD. Manor Police and Travis County sheriff’s deputies pursued the car and suspects fled after driving into a field off Farm-to-Market 973. Police say one suspect was arrested near the car, another fled into brush and was pursued by K-9 units and helicopters and another was detained after a call about a suspicious person near FM 973.
Police said charges for all three suspects are “under review,” but that they could face counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, theft of a firearm and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, among other charges.
The investigation is ongoing, but APD said Monday that there is no longer an ongoing threat to the public.
